| Abstract | The objective of this work was to develop a method to estimate coffee, corn and soybean area in the region of Cornélio Procópio, Paraná State, Brazil, that comprises 23 municipalities. The direct expansion method with regular segments of 1 x 1 km, was selected for area estimation. Remote sensing images, classification procedures, GIS, GPS among others were used for stratification of sample panel, location of segments, image analysis etc. From the total study area 1.26% was sampled which corresponds to 89 segments that were visited during a field work of 12 days in early December. Compared to the official estimates, best results were obtained for soybean crop, which occupies 32.1% of the entire study area. Soybean was underestimated by 5.9% with a coefficient of variation equal to 6.6%. Results were available in mid December and no difficulty was found to identify the segments in the field with the GPS, indicating that the proposed method is adequate to provide accurate forecast area estimation for high density crop cultivation. | |||
